VLC sometimes freezes my computer when I launch it

Hi everyone.
I recently installed Linux Mint 18.3 and I just can't prevent VLC to sometimes freeze entirely, freezing also my OS in the same processus. (I don't know why some other times it works.) Each time I have to do CTRL + ALT + F3 and do "reboot", it's boring. I tried to install VLC with "snap", since it seems that it's the only way to have the 3.01 version, and to entirely remove the other VLC stuff on my computer. I also tried to have a normal installation besides the snap version (since I wasn't able to remove the normal version when I tried that) but the result was exactly the same. (I really don't get why such a perfect open source software like VLC is causing me so much trouble to make it work normally...)
According to my driver manager and to my update manager, everything is up to date. Interestingly, when my computer freeze because of VLC, the fans of my computer start and go faster expansionally, without stopping, like VLC is making my computer go heater and heater.
What am I doing wrong ?

Could you try to disable harware acceleration in preference -> Input codec

Hi, I have more precisions on the nature of my problem : VLC freezes my screen only when I launch a video file, and it is more the case when the resolution is 1080p I think. If I launch an audio file, or just VLC itself, it never freezes.

Thank you for your answer chubinou, I disabled hardware acceleration and it made no difference.
And I'm not sure I understood what you suggested, should I enter that command in a terminal and copy what is shown in the terminal, here, or is there a location for that logs.txt file ? I searched in the snap folder of VLC but I didn't see any log file. Sorry I'm not very used to linux (even though I try to get used to it, little by little).

It is not freezing the OS if you can press Ctrl+Alt+F3 and type commands.

WIthout logs, and without consistent problem description, probably nobody can help you

Yes sorry if I was unclear. I don't really know what is the status of the CTRL ALT F3 menu. I guess it's only the graphical display of my OS that freezes.
I'd like to give you the logs but like I said I don't really know how to do it, could you be a bit more specific about what content I should copy here when I do the command that was mentioned earlier ?

Go to Tools -> Preferences -> All -> Advanced -> Logger

check "Log to file", enter filename for the log file, choose "Text" for log format and "Debug" for Verbosity and then save the settings

Open clips with vlc and then paste the log. Maybe there will be something useful for developers to fix your issue.

I finally succeeded to get a log right after the launch of a file that froze the graphical interface of my OS. It took a long time sorry !
