Debian troubles..

Postby FaNtAsMa » 16 Nov 2005 00:30

When trying to install VLC in debian, I get this:

root@box:~# apt-get install vlc
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
vlc: Depends: libstdc++6 (>= 4.0.2-3) but 4.0.2-2 is to be installed
Depends: wxvlc but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

Thanks in advance for any help.

I think that it's sarge, but I'm not sure. I used knoppix to install it.
Architecture? like x86?

the VLC debian repository for sarge is totally b0rked.

It contains only libdvdcss2 and smthg else

I'm running testing. (Etch), half the packages that vlc (i had to use the woody repos.) depends on are not available in testing, i had to use stable.

libdvdread2 for instance and libvorbis0 (superceded by libvorbis0a apparently but that wouldn't help the vlc install...it wanted libvorbis0)

VLC is one of the only decent media players for Linux. Being a little bit more debian-friendly would be nice.

I'm running Debian unstable (SID) with no problems.

I use the nightly builds, with this line in my sources.list:

deb http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/sid-i386/arch ./

what are the advantages?

I have it installed and working now, but it took some wangling of repositories and such.

It's not an apt experience i wish to repeat for the libraries that aren't provided here.
