VLC 2.2.4 crashing playing DVD

Tried to play the dvd "Arrival" using VLC and this caused VLC to crash on Linuxmint 18.1, also tried Totem and it failed to play the DVD but did not crash (attempted on multiple computers)
Then tried playing the dvd "Arrival" using VLC on Windows 7 again VLC crashed.
As an experiment tried using Windows Media Player on Windows 7 and it did manage to play the DVD but identified it as an Unknown DVD.
Anyone else tried this dvd and got VLC to play it?
