vlc plays small video in lower left corner

Description of problem:
When playing any video on vlc-3.0.0-0.9.fc24 it plays in the lower left corner of the vlc window with a lot of blank space around. It does not scale to the window size. When using dnf downgrade and playing the file with vlc-3.0.0-0.1.fc24 it plays correctly.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Fedora 24, vlc-3.0.0-0.9.fc24

How reproducible:
Every time vlc-3.0.0-0.9 is used. Using vlc-3.0.0-0.1 does NOT have that problem.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. open any video with vlc-3.0.0-0.9.fc24
2. it will show the video in the lower left corner of the vlc window with a whole lot of blank space.
3.

Actual results:
small video playing with large black space in vlc window

Expected results:
size the video according to the window size so it fits most of the vlc screen.

Additional info:
This is not a problem with the settings of vlc. The vlcrc file was deleted so it could be recreated, same issue. The video preferences were tweaked like "fit window size", etc. no difference. Running vlc on x11 or Wayland shows the same problem.

I confirm the problem (Fedora 25 + Gnome 3.22 on Wayland + vlc 3.0.0 0.9.fc25). Here is a screenshot: https://framapic.org/za0D5bue2wDw/RBIcVA5BeIb1.png.

Moreover, as you can see in the screenshot, the font size of the menu is quite huge compared to Skype on the right (which font size is ok). I don't know if @egcp has the same problem though.

Please note that this problem only appears on my laptop screen (hidpi) and not on the external monitor (not hidpi). When moving the VLC window from one screen to the other, the video size immediately changes (even without releasing the mouse button I use to drag the window).

why vlc why you are basically a necessity for life why....running f25, huge buttons, little video output in bottom left, huge buttons, menus do not even fit on screen, see screenshots http://imgur.com/a/PSwLX
i tried rolling back to X did not help...might add i have had problems using this LG tv as a monitor before I believe it reports itself as a 1''x1'' but vlc is the only thing having mixed up resolutions now whereas last time it was across the board
