VLC 2.2.1 no movie covers displayed - is this a bug?

Hi,
on Ubuntu 14.04 I have installed VLC 2.1.6 from official Ubuntu repository. This version has some trouble with sound if movie is forward/backward rewinded like with CTRL+right/left arrow key or ALT+right/left arrow key... So I would like to test VLC 2.2.1, so I installed it using PPA following this instructions http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/201 ... ntu-14-04/
Movie cover problem:
1. Media | Open directory and select directory where movies are stored.
2. For each of the movie one icon is displayed, but no movie cover. I am 100% sure each move has movie cover embed in .mkv file (I add it manually into this file).
Movie cover is displayed only if I double click on movie to start playing and pressing STOP button.
In default VLC 2.1.6 when I open a directory all movies gets its cover. Is there some special setting to enable automatic movie cover display in VLC 2.2.1 or is this a bug?
P.S. I see VLC media player is opening each file to see the title of the movie and replaces file name with title found inside .mkv movie (I added this title, so I know what it should appear like).
Thanks
See bellow the problem. First three movies I have clicked on icon to start playing a movie and click on STOP button. Then icon is displayed. So work-around is to click on each of the movie to get a movie cover - this is big pain...
