setting to autorotate iphone video

Is there a setting to read the metadata that iphones write into their videos and then auto rotate during playback? For example, shoot a video on your iphone vertically initially, then still while shooting it, rotate the screen horizontally. Now, play back this video with VLC. Currently, VLC is unaware of the 90 degree flip. Thanks!

...is there a compile time or GUI option needed to enable this feature?

You need one of the default video output, supporting it.
