Hi
I'm settings up remote access fro my phone but after an update of vlc I can't find .host file any more and my phone won't connect to the vlc server.

VLC 2.1.x replaced the lame IP checks with password authentication.

Although many users desire to use a password free http interface (as password requirement breaks a lot of vlc interface code) the developers insist that vlc be protected with a password. They call this desire "crazy". Even if you have a dedicated media computer that is firewalled OFF the internet (by access restriction in a router) and specify only 192.... access, this is not enough protection, it would seem.

I use the android app "vlc remote" and have not been able to get it to work with vlc 2.1.x and have gone back to a pre-password mandated version. I also have a tcl/tk program to control vlc (with such things as permanent bookmarks). But I haven't had the time to figure out how to do passwords in that language's http package. So, I'm stuck with neither of my remotes working with the latest version.

Many years ago I would go to DECUS conferences and the favorite phrase of the developers was "Why would anyone want to do that?" It would seem the WWAWTDT people are alive and well here. I figure I'll come back to this in a few years and see if someone relents on this tyrannical obsession with security.

Of course, why would anyone ever want - uh, permanent bookmarks  ?

Obvious troll is obvious. Most people did not understand the security implications of enabling the HTTP interface. If you do, then it should be piece of cake for you to edit the HTTP Lua script to not require a password.
