Problems With V4L2 capture and VLC

Hey VLC, first time poster. I'm having a problem recording video from a capture card connected with v4l2. When I record, it will say that it ran for the entire 10 minutes or so, but when I go back to review the footage, it's only recorded for a few seconds. I'm using VLC 2.1.2 in Xubuntu 14.04.
