Yes, hello, nice to meet you all

Well I'm 1 week into using my first linux. I've managed to set up gimp and set up wine. now it's time for VLC player... I've read all 6 instruction lines on this page here (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-mandriva.html) but I've gotten a couple errors and yet a couple of what looks like installations as well. (but installation of what?) the error I got said "No package named libdvdplay0"; same for libmatroska0. I've tried the easy urpmi thingy as well, without any apparent success. so the question is, what am I looking for? should an icon for the Player appear at some point in my launcher doodad, or is there a command line I can use to craft my own icon? david letterman is waiting for me to watch him twiddle pencils, and I don't know what to do

p.s. feel my dismay!

seriously? nobody here can say for example, "yes your player's missing because libdvdplay0 wasn't installed", or "you did everything wrong, start again"?

Believe you need copy what happens to post here, without this sort of information is hard to help with your "couple errors and yet a couple of what looks like installations"

wikipedia says mandriva uses urpmi which is similar to my opensuse's zypper

Try un-install, then re-install either if not long just copy and paste to here, if long save what happens to a file so can copy and paste here.

Self zypper installed VLC a while ago on openSuSE 12.1 for kids to use for video watching, no problems.

Self zypper installed VLC today on my other openSUSE 12.2 no problems to watch video or listen to music.

Am here as have VLC problem trying to listen to BBC audio {:-O

On this 12.2 is : VLC media player 2.1.0-git Rincewind (revision 2.1.0-git)

BTW am NON-Technical and several years a happy linux user - mostly openSUSE,
