Distorted crackling sound when playing DVDs in Ubuntu 12.04

Hi guys, hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 couple days ago and now when I try to play DVDs, the sound is greatly distorted. I can kinda hear what it says but it's barely legible - loud crackling covers most of the audio.

The media stream of this disk shows Codec: A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52)

Is this something in VLC I need changed or some library is missing? I installed the restricted formats package for Ubuntu. Anything else I need to do?

using VLC media player 2.0.3 Twoflower

Thanks!

Sometimes, I have the same problem, not olny but mostly when watching mpeg2 transport streams (recorded with the VDR software).

In mos cases, it helps to kill the pulseaudio demon: Open a terminal, and execute

Code: Select all

pulseaudio -k
Pulseaudio will immediately restart itself after being killed.

In some cases, you don't have no audio in Programs that were already open. So, you may neet do restart VLC also. Or sometimes it may be sufficient to go to the DVD main menu and start the movie again. or ...
many things you can try. ...

Markus, it worked!

Thank you very much! I just have to find a way to make it stick after a reboot. Now I know in which direction to look, thanks again.

Cheers!
