major issues with software

OK, when this software works, it plays anything and everything very well. Every time I go to install this software, it is never the same, and for the past 3 times its been at least 6 hours worth of work to get this to run correctly.

I am using Fedora Core 4, I have previously installed vlc 8.1.whatever under FC3. I had it rnning fine after I figured out the correct order to install all the rpm packages in from the .tar.gz package. Then, after installing fc3 on another, but very similar machine, I had to look for and download additional packages (libcdio0, etc.)

Fast forward to now. I am on FC4 after a system crash where vlc was running PERFECTLY. With the 8.1 version I got from the FC3 directory on freshrpms.net, I can oppen the program and play everything exept MPEG-1 files, I get a segmentation fault error. I found that there is a new version, 8.2, for FC4 on freshrpms.net. After installing and running it, it starts up with a Mac OS X skin and won't let me do ANYTHING.... the error says: skins2 interface error:No suitable dialgos provider found.

I've tried everything, reinstalling, playing with different packages, and importing the old skins2 folder and skin prefs from /.vlc/vlcrc to the same under the new version. no luck getting the new version.

I had the segmentaion fault error before, but that was when I was able to install the older 8.1 version available in the .tar.gz file on this site, and then updating it with the 8.1 package from freshrpms.net. That fixed the problem. This is not the case. It is being most difficult.

I am really at the end of my rope here... if any can offer any help, please do. Thank you.

VLC was not configured/compiled with wxwindows interface support (this provides the dialogs and menus)

i'm having the same issue and i have built vlc with wxwindows interface support.

./configure --enable-wxwindows

configured and built without complaints, but no dialogs. something's broken somewhere. there doesn;t even seem to be a way to even force vlc to use wxwindows - always skins2 even though the wxwindows plugin module is sitting right there in the /usr/local/lib/vlc/gui directory.

this is incredibly frustrating...

vlc -l | grep wxwindows
Should return something like

Code: Select all

wxwindows WxWindows interface
If it doesn't, then VLC hasn't found the wxwindows module. It is as simple as that. Apparently there is something wrong then with the searchpath of the plugins. You can use --plugin-path to override the default VLC settings.
