VLC on openSUSE 10.2 - Can't Add the Repository

Postby l337dexter » 16 Dec 2006 00:24

Whenever I try to add the repository like the new installation instructions say, I get this error:

http://download.videolan.org/pub/videol ... /SuSE/10.2
Unknown Error: Downloading metadata failed (is YUM source?) or user did not accept remote source. Aborting refresh.

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Dexter

- Are you trying to add it using YaST?
- Do you get a message abut the import of the gpg key? You have to accept that one.

Otherwise, you can try the the command (in a shell):

Code: Select all

sudo rug sa -t zypp http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.8.6/SuSE/10.2 VLC
And this should add it too.

Tell us if this helped you.

VLC on openSUSE 10.2 - Can't Add the Repository

Postby wul31 » 16 Dec 2006 14:47

I have the same problem that l337dexter has.
As proposed by dimstar, I tried :
"sudo rug add sa -t zypp http://download.videolan.org/pub/videol ... /SuSE/10.2 VLC"

But, I received this error message
"ERROR: Argument 'add' is invalid"

so i'am stuck.

Any clues ?

Thank you

Error in command

Postby dimstar » 16 Dec 2006 15:57

Sorry... I seemed to be sleepy.

add does not have to be in the line (sa is the short form off service add)

Sorry, my fault.

Pls try again.

Yes I was using YaST and no it was not asking to import the key. I tried doing it the command line way though and it worked fine. Thanks for the help!

This should solve the problems of anyone who didn't get the script to run...

sudo doesn't provide sufficient permissions,

You have to "su root" to be run the script with sufficient permissions.

After running the script, you can verify the new entry in your list of Installation Sources, then run YAST and search for VLC. Recommend then installing the first and third options to install the VLC standalone player and the Mozilla plugin to run within web pages.

HTH...

This worked for me, in that sence that i was able to install VLC. But the program is not working properly, ie. i cant open files or settings menu from within the VLC.
The movies and music plays well- i can live with the error ;) but rater not.

Stromsted,

What sort of errors do you get?

Maybe you should open a new thread for it, stating exact error messages (probably with debugging on). Hopefully we can help you in this situation.

Dominique

There was a problem with the signature of the repo.

This got just fixed in this moment and the repo can again be added to the different tools.

Adding zypp service...

Masterofmind1969,

What dependencies are there not fullfilled, VLC is not using any libs on 10.2 that are not either shipped with 10.2 or available in the repository.

In case you have some immense problems with repos, please also try to add an online repository of openSUSE 10.2

Code: Select all

rug sa -t zypp http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/10.2/repo/oss/suse/ OSS
and then subscribe to the channel with

Code: Select all

rug sub OSS

Postby mark@home » 30 Jan 2007 19:29

Hi Everyone. I am getting the error messages as detailed earlier, the repository is not not being added, text follows...

Code: Select all

markb@markandkaren:~> sudo rug sa -t zypp http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.8.6/SuSE/10.2 VLC Adding zypp service... 0% ERROR: Could not add 'http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.8.6/SuSE/10.2': Failed to parse XML metadata: Can't add repository at http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.8.6/SuSE/10.2: Unknown source type for http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.8.6/SuSE/10.2
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Are you sure you typed the whole URL right? Especially take care of the word SuSE (all caps, except u)

According to http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-suse.html the repository is now version independet (so no 0.8.6 in the URL anymore)

Code: Select all

rug sa -t zypp http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/SuSE/10.2 VLC rug sub VLC
If this is not working for you, PM me so we can change Mail address... I might want to have a look on a bunch of logfiles, which are not worth being posted here (as they get huge very fast).

Dominique

Well I have no idea what happened. I needed to send the zmd-messages.log and zmd-backend.log files out so i deleted them, rebooted and ran the command again and hey presto it worked. VLC is now added as a repository...

Don't know how, just happy it works.

Thanks to dimstar for the support, much appreciated. :D

Guys,

While we are able to add the repository via command line why we are not getting this error message on YAST? I think we all are kind of in a rush =) I just realized if we chose "specify URL" option instead of choosing "http" as the type of source we are able to add the repository properly as well. I guess sometimes it worths the read till the end.. %) Just thought this might be useful for new ones who are going to refer this topic.

./Cheers
