Help Installing VLC in Fedora 5

Postby zozo17 » 04 Oct 2006 05:43

Hey everyone, I just recently installed the Fedora distribution of Linux on my computer. This is my first time using Linux as I would like to get familiar with it as I use it at school for my labs. Anyways, I'm having major problems installing VLC. I dowlnoaded the rpm files and athe public key. However, entering the given commands in the terminal window doesn't do much. I don't really understand any of these linux commands and what the logic is behind it. I tried finding info, but it's all assumed that one knows how to use Linux. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, this wont help you understand Linux commands but if your goal is to just get VideoLan installed, here is what I did.

I opened http://www.freshrpms.net in Firefox. There is a link on the main page to jump to the downloads for FC5. Found the vlc rpm, clicked it and chose to open it. After the rpm was downloaded the installer launched. It complained that it could not resolve one dependency which was libopendaap. Went back to freshrpms and found libopendaap, opened it the same way. Once that was installed I went back and opened the vlc rpm again and it installed.

I was able to launch VideoLan client but have not tried to play any media yet.
