Playing h264 in Ubuntu

Postby crazybrit » 04 Sep 2006 22:09

Here's my problem: I have almost all of my dvds encoded in h.264 format for my iPod (320x240, bitrate of 576, codec x264b13) using Handbrake for Windows. And they play fine on my iPod, in Quicktime, and in VLC for Windows. But when I try to play them in VLC in Ubuntu (Dapper), it looks fine for almost half the video:

But the rest of the time it looks like this:

I tried messing around with some settings but that didn't do anything. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You need more recent ffmpeg with your VLC. You might find a newer version on http://nightlies.videolan.org ... i can't guarantee anything though.

Doesn't look like it's recent enough :) Newer versions of VLC use newer versions of FFMPEG which decode H264 streams far better.

Are you saying there's a more recent version available?

If you compile it yourself, sure.

Solution: update to newer ffmpeg and VLC. But that's not going to happen unless we release a new VLC version i think (which should be pretty soon (less than a month) since we're doing a 0.8.5 bug fix release). Else you could ask the ubuntu VLC package mantainer to recompile it with a newer ffmpeg version.

Does anyone know when the next Ubuntu Dapper-Drake release will be? I tried to compile it myself, but couldn't get it to work
