VLC uninstall of 3.0.21

Postby Vidcomp » 21 Jul 2024 00:19

When I try to uninstall VLC from Debian 12 using sudo apt purge vlc it appears to execute but does not remove all components a search show /usr/bin/VLC still present.

I manually removed all components of VLC and tried to reinstall using sudo apt install VLC and I get the message "vlc is already the newest version (3.0.21-0+deb12u1)"

What could be the reason for these situations ?

VLC is broken up into many packages on Debian.

Your response is incorrect.

I found that on a newly installed version of VLC on Debian 12 when I removed VLC using the sudo apt remove VLC is completely removed. This means a modification on Debian 12 occurred that prevented VLC from uninstalling. I manually removed VLC to correct.

My answer is probably correct. VLC is broken down into 21 or 22 distinct binary packages on Debian as stated on the official Debian package list: https://packages.debian.org/src:vlc
