Photo slideshow on Raspberry Pi 3B+ crashing

My application is for a repetitive, random display of photos and videos in a folder, using a Raspberry Pi 3B+. I installed the latest Raspbian release with desktop which has VLC Player in it. No problem with playlists that have videos, but VLC crashes with even a simple playlist of 10 jpg photos, of resolution 3464 x 2309, this is with the latest Raspbian release for the Pi 3B+. I tried the exact same media files with VLC player installed on a Windows 10 laptop, no problems there. JPEGS with lower resolution seem to get displayed properly. Any pointers would be appreciated.
