Toy Story 1 can be played on a remote Kubuntu VLC client but the other 3 cannot.
All of these movies can be played from a remote Windows 10 VLC client but the same issue, 1 can play and 3 cannot, applies for 3 Kubuntu 19.10 VLC clients. All the movies can be played on all the clients if the movie is played as a local file.
As I suspected there may be an problem with the multiplexing I demultiplexed Toy Story 1 and 2 and remultiplexed them but the results were unchanged. I also moved the newly multiplexed files to a different directory which also had no effect. I also installed the File Manager Nautilus to test if my normal File Manager, Dolphin was the culprit, also no effect.
Following on from this I tested several dozen other movies on the server and could not find a common feature that causes the problem, although it is worth noting that only mkv movies would not play and many mkv movies would. Of the 4 movies listed above, all are mkv 4K/UHD/2160P with colour space of BT2020.
Due to space limitations I am unable to post the log, or even appear to be able to upload it.
