Numerous error messages when vlc invoked via 3rd party program

I am using a subtitle editor which uses VLC as the video player. When invoking VLC I get the following error messages:

In addition to VLC I have libvlc-dev installed. When used to play a normal movie it works just fine. Can anyone point me in the right direction please.
