A/V not sync or choppy playback - 2.2.8 on Raspbian PRi3

We are using 2.2.8 on RPi3 with Raspbian Stretch for playing IPTV streams from mixed sources, mostly RTP and some UDP.
If I have set the option to drop late frames, synchronization between audio and video is fine, however, the video is extremely choppy.
If I have set the option to NOT drop late frames the video plays well but gets behind a few seconds per minute while the audio is playing normally ending in a huge lip-sync offset.
Decoding and output is using OMX-IL.

Is there another setting that I can try to improve this?

Same issue.
Running recompiled version 2.2.8 with hardware acceleration.
Plays movies on disk and even http streams with ease, but struggles with UDP.

Nope - not so far. VLC 3 up to 3.0.3 is not working at all.
We plan to ditch VLC and try to move on with OMX player (which has other issues, unfortunately).

Doing exactly the same! Well my partner is working on OMX player issues, we found some playback issues during long periods of play, and OMX's logs are utter gibberish with no decent documentation, at least that we could find.

I was thinking of trying to compile an older version of VLC, 2.2.6, maybe even 2.2.1, have you heard any success's with downgrading?

I never tried with older versions - I started with 2.2.8.
For us, the biggest issue with OMX for our project is it's long starting time which in addition varies a lot. Joining a stream (UDP or RTP), it can take anything from 3s to 10s until the playback starts. In addition, the parameters to influence this are not really user-friendly and make it hard to optimize for a fast and reliable start. An even bigger issue is that it sometimes leaves processes behind after stopping and killing these is not fixing it, needing a reboot - I did not analyze this further, that was the time I moved to VLC.
With VLC, programs start much quicker and with less variance.

However it will play this exact same piece of media perfectly over http stream.

I've compiled this version of VLC to work with the Rpi's hardware acceleration, MMAL decoder isn't listed as an option but all the other decoder options struggle to play high resolution media. Only the OMXIL triggers the overlay and plays smoothly (aside from a UDP source).

OMXIL does work up to 2.2.8 and not on any of the 3.x versions.

I built every version of 3.x with and/or without MMAl and/or OMXIL. Me and nobody I know over at the RPi forum has ever successfully used VLC 3.x on Raspbian.
I stand by what I already wrote: On Raspbian, the latest version that works is 2.2.8.

Yes I followed that exact build guide. Just tested it on PC with VLC and UDP doesn't work well there either.
But it plays perfectly on Rpi with OMX player. Source is a dvd from a dvd player via digital encoder.

Yes, it will.

Didn't work for me, tried to use it with a standard build from the repo. Played incredibly sluggish and there was no sign of hardware acceleration/screen overlay.

Never mind.
On PC, it works for me playing UDP, RTP streams from various sources. For RTP there is no statistics, unfortunately (broken since 3).
If it does not play well for you on PC, there might be an issue with your encoder/settings.

@McLion I checked my encoder, seems to be running fine. I've opted to work with kodi, as of now it plays everything smoothly and gives some extra configuration options and tools.
