"Unidentified codec" after upgrading to VLC 3.0.2-1+b1

Postby uigqwfqq » 08 May 2018 21:52

So, I wanted the infamous play/pause on middle button functionality ...
Before installing the plugin, however, I updated.
Now I get "Unidentified codec: VLC could not identify the audio or video codec".
I don't see how updating should in any way lead to this error.
I already deleted the plugin with:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/vlc/plugins/video_filter/libpause_click_plugin.so
My system is:
uname -a
Linux user-pc 4.5.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.5.1-1 (2016-04-14) x86_64 GNU/Linux
For reasons regarding the damn NVIDIA driver I can't upgrade the linux kernel, but I'm using software from the Debian sid repositories anyway and with success.

These packages were upgraded:
sudo apt-get install -t sid vlc

The video is a simple x264 codec:

The sound plays just fine, only the video is missing.

P.S.: The forum software seems bugged ... line breaks inside code statements are deleted! That's why it is in quotes. I'm beginning to loose my cool. Just wanted to watch a nice movie and in trying to solve one usability bug, I stumbled upon four others :(

Code: Select all

Make sure the MKV plugin is installed and working. If so, then the file simply is not supported (and probably never was).

The file worked in 2.2! I updated in the middle of watching the movie, so I can say that for sure! (Also the file works fine with smplayer)
dpkg -l '*vlc-plugin*'
ii vlc-plugin-base:amd64 3.0.2-1+b1 amd64 multimedia player and streamer (base plugins)
ii vlc-plugin-notify:amd64 3.0.2-1+b1 amd64 LibNotify plugin for VLC
ii vlc-plugin-qt:amd64 3.0.2-1+b1 amd64 multimedia player and streamer (Qt plugin)
ii vlc-plugin-samba:amd64 3.0.2-1+b1 amd64 Samba plugin for VLC
ii vlc-plugin-video-output: 3.0.2-1+b1 amd64 multimedia player and streamer (video output plugins)
ii vlc-plugin-video-splitte 3.0.2-1+b1 amd64 multimedia player and streamer (video splitter plugin
Going into Tools->Plugins and Extensions->Plugins and searching for MKV or Matroska turns up no matches, even though the vlc-plugin-video-splitter package is installed, see above.
The only three plugins showing with capability "video splitter" are: Clone video filter, Panoramix: wall with overlap video filter, Wall video filter.

P.S.: The Plugin window is always behind the VLC window. No video is playing.
P.P.S.: Nothing works. I tested a wider range of files webm, mp4, ogv, mkv, all with different files and presumably different codecs. Some, like MP4, don't give an error message though, they just lead to the VLC icon blinking unevenly and nothing plays ... as if it was crashing and restarting constantly.
