Unicode subtitles not all displaying

Postby Rosuav » 12 Mar 2015 00:35

There's info on this all over the web, but I've followed the usual instructions and still having no luck.

Subtitles file: https://github.com/Rosuav/LetItTrans/bl ... guages.srt

In that file are subtitles involving Chinese, Thai, Japanese, and Korean characters, all of which are showing up as boxes rather than being correctly rendered. I've told VLC to use the FreeType renderer, and tried a variety of fonts, including some which I've tested in other applications and verified do indeed have those characters represented (eg DejaVu Sans Mono); the file is UTF-8 encoded and VLC is expecting UTF-8; and all the other languages are correctly rendered, including non-ASCII characters (Latin letters with various diacritical marks, Cyrillic text, and also Arabic and Greek (though not in that file), all work fine).

Can anyone see a problem with my setup?

Yep I have this issue too.
Trying to get Thai subtitles to show. An external .srt file that VLC picks up and displays lots of little boxes instead of the Thai script.
Using VLC 2.2.6 on Windows 7.
Doesn't look like anyone is interested in answering as this was posted in 2015...
HELP!
