Often freezes for minutes in very slow motion, single step and skip forward/back

Postby vlc-user » 28 Aug 2015 23:16

Hi,

Generally, I'd like to say that VLC is my favorite player because of the user-friendly UI and the numerous playing options.
However, I'm having some trouble while using some of the options.

I love to watch some FX scenes (e.g. explosions) in ultra slow motion or single step. For switching to slomo, I use the minus key, for single step the "e" key. Mouse wheel is used for volume control.

No matter if I switch to slomo in paused or in playing state, VLC freezes at speed slower than 0,12x (the exact speed when it starts freezing is varying). It freezes up to several minutes, then it plays at the selected speed. First I thought it reads the video file from the beginning, but then I tested switching to slomo at the beginning of the clip, with the same result. I can also confirm that it is not an I/O performance problem. When I copy the video file to a RAM-Disk (tmpfs), it also makes no difference.

Similar behaviour when sinlge stepping more than 20 ... 40 frames (varying). The freezing is just not that long, but a minute or so also occurs often.

When single stepping, sometimes there is another strange thing: after a varying number of steps, it skips a few frames (maybe to the next index frame ?).

Skip forward/backward works most times, but sometimes it freezes too. In these situations, the time postion (right part of the time toolbar) looks different. A bit like marked text in an editor.

I have experienced these things with all video formats I have used so far: .mpg .ts .mkv .flv .mov .avi ... (.ts are mpeg 2 transport strams, recorded by VDR).

I'm using VLC version 2.2.1 on Arch Linux 64 bit. But older versions on (X)Ubuntu also showed the same behaviour. Video card is a AMD/ATI Radeon HD 5400 with the OpenSource driver. "Accelerated Video Output (Overlay)" option is ON.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,
Markus
Thanks and Regards,
Markus

I'm wondering if I'm the only one who uses these features (maxumim slow motion and single step) at all or if I'm the only one one who has problems using them.
Thanks and Regards,
Markus
