Blackmagic Decklink (witch linux distro)

Hi, I am getting a Blackmagic Design Datalink Mini Monitor card to connect a PC to a 2K projector in the volunteer run cinema I help at. Have spent some time researching on the internet and it seems VLC is the best player for us. The PC is currently dual boot Linux Mint 16 and windows 7. Will the version of VLC packaged with this version of Linux work (I gather windows is not an option) . If not should I switch distributions or do I need to compile from source. All advice gratefully received.
