crashes with newer versions

Postby bernd_b » 11 Aug 2014 23:09

Does this makes sense:

To avoid this: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=119590 problem, I happily used a self compiled git version, which introduces itself as r2.1.0git3527g1172ce6.

Just being curious, I tried newer versions, e.g
2.2.0.git.225.g94eb951 or
2.2.0.git.388.g69af053

But what happened is, that after some or some more minutes of playback (mostly h264-footage) the screen is suddenly covered by screen squares under which the last picture is frozen and hardly recognizable, and bad enough a loud noise is coming out of the speakers. In short: the pc crashes and only a hardware reset turns it to function again.

I had these kind of crashes some times ago with mpv, but as far as I tried the seem to disappear with newer current versions. With vlc the opposite seems to happen: every time I downgrade to r2.1.0git3527g1172ce6, the playback becomes stable again.

Again: Does this makes sense at all?

Here some facts, I happily provide more:
I am on archlinux, mostly using deinterlacer (X) and vaapi turned on (because 1080 playback is nearly not possible without on this platform)

Code: Select all

That reads like a display driver problem...

Meaning older git versions don't use driver(=vaapi?!)functions which more recent git-versions do which lead to crashes?
Because when up or downgrading, I don't change the x11-drivers or their configuration.

The symptoms look like that of a display driver problem. That is all I'm saying. It might well be a problem with something else.
