Audio > Visualizations grayed out

I'd like to turn on the VU meter visualization, but Audio > Visualizations is grayed out. Other than that, VLC is working fine.

Ubuntu 12.04, VLC media player 2.0.8 Twoflower

Wait -- sorry, visualizations are available when playing an audio file. But I'd like to make the visualizations work when recording. Is this possible?
