I have a Logitech webcam that I want to use to take a still image every few minutes. I have a virtual (using the latest Oracle VirtualBox) openSUSE 13.1 system with the LXDE desktop. My first attempt to do this was with "cheese." I could never get it to run as it apparently uses version 3 of OpenGL, and VirtualBox doesn't support that. That's when I decided to try VLC.
I have the camera working in Windows 7 on my physical machine. I have shared it with the openSUSE machine through VirtualBox. When I enter 'lsusb' at a command prompt, I see 'Bus 001 Device 003: ID 046d:081b Logitech, Inc. Webcam C310', so I think that everything is good to this point.
I start VLC Media Player. I select 'media' and then 'open capture device'. For 'capture mode', I select 'Video camera', for 'Video device name' I have one device available in the pull down menu, and it's '/dev/video0'. I have three devices available under 'Audio device name'. None of them seem to produce any sound, but I don't care because I only want to take still pictures. I click the arrow on the right of 'Play' and select 'Play' from a list of four items. Once I do that, this error pops up:
I've looked through /var/log and all over my system. I can't find a log file for VLC Media Player. I read somewhere that I had to start it with '--file-logging' added to the command line. I am doing this, but I still can't find a log file to tell me what is happening.
