CPU Usage

I've noticed that the Linux version of VLC seems to use a massive amount of CPU power when watching a video. When playing an Xvid encoded movie with a resolution of 640x480, the CPU usage seems to hover between 60-70%. It's not a major issue as the movie still plays, but doing things like playing two videos at the same time is totally out of the question. The Windows version of VLC seems to use more like 10-20% playing the same file. My system isn't exactly state of the art (Athlon XP 2400) but it's no slouch either. What can this be attributed to? Why doesn't the Windows version have this issue? Anything I can do to bring this down?

Your VLC might not be using hardware rendering?
So your X11 does not have a good Xvideo setup.

The Video Output Filter is set to default. I tried changing it to OpenGL to see if that would get to use "hardware rendering", but that just resulted in higher CPU usage (100%) and jerky video. I changed it back to default.

What do you mean by "X11 doesn't have a good Xvideo setup"? What might be wrong with it? What can I do to fix it?

In Windows, even if I select OpenGL or DirectX as the output filter, it seems to work okay, with CPU usage in the 10% reigon

Xvideo. Go use google please. we are not a linux helpdesk. it all depends on your distribution and stuff. There are better places to get information about this.
