vlcj - Failed to write core dump (error)

Postby acsnrj » 19 Feb 2013 19:44

Dear Friends,

I'm developing an application to capture video from a webcam using vlc and vlcj. When I run, I get the following error message:

The error message seems self-explanatory.

If you're asking about the underlying issue here, rather than how to enable core dumps...

There is some particular problem with Java7+vlc+32bit-Ubuntu+LUA.

When I last looked into this problem I only found workarounds not the actual root cause of the problem or any fixes:

1. Use Java6 rather than Java7
2. Use 64-bit rather than 32-bit Ubuntu (not a realistic option)
3. Delete all the LUA scripts from your vlc installation (YouTube etc will stop working)
4. Recompile vlc with the standard LUA package directly from lua.org instead of the LUA package that comes with Ubuntu

Each of those workarounds individually works for me.

There is also a related topic here: viewtopic.php?f=32&t=107553

Short version: there is no easy answer for this that I know of.
