Updating about multicast using vlc

Postby MariaMaggio » 23 Aug 2005 09:48

Hello,
Yestarday I typed this commands on the router:
- Router# conf t
- Router(config)# ip multicast routing
- Router(config)# interface fa 0/0.1
- Router(config-subif)# ip pim dense mode
- Router(config)# interface fa 0/0.2
- Router(config-subif)# ip pim dense mode
- Router(config)# interface fa 0/0.3
- Router(config-subif)# ip pim dense mode

Then I used vlc (http://www.videolan.org) to test multicast network and the stream starts if hosts are in the same vlan.
What's the problem in your opinion?

Regards

TTL is wrong

Postby Craefter » 23 Aug 2005 10:27

Hi,

You can't really go wrong with dense-mode. I think you used the wizard to set up the multicast stream and the wizard has a problem.

VLC sets the TTL by default to 1 so the multicast stream doesn't pass the current broadcast domain. Seen from your config the stream passes at least one router so you would need at least a TTL of 2.

In the VLC wizard you can set the TTL to whatever value you like but the result will be always 1.

Make a shortcut and use the commandline to set up your stream. Helpful was this website: http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO/Vi ... HOWTO.html (Works for Windows too)

You can always check your real TTL with the help of ethereal. ;)

uptodate docs are available here : http://Www.videolan.org/doc/

concerning the wizard ttl issue, it has been fixed in the dev version. You can give it a try by using a nightly build (or building it your self)

Postby MariaMaggio » 25 Aug 2005 12:56

Hi danny,
I'm sorry but I don't understand how I can check my real ttl.
What's ethereal?

Hi Antoine,
How I can download update for linux?
In this link http://Www.videolan.org/doc/ I haven't try it.
Moreover where can I give dev version to set TTL?

Thank you very much about your answers.
Maria

http://vthr.videolan.org/~videolan is where you can get nightly builds

if your OS/distrib isn't available, you'll have to build it yourself : http://developers.videolan.org/vlc/

i unfortunately have no experience with slackware (only debian or gentoo).

What you basically need is to install the packages (those that you need) listed on the http://developers.videolan.org/vlc/ page. (use the latest versions available on those projects' websites ... except ffmpeg where you need to use the cvs version).

Once those are installed, you can download a VLC source code snapshot ( ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/snapshots/ ). Uncompress it, run ./bootstrap, ./configure with the appropriate options (more info on the developer's website) and make.

If you need more help, post here or join #videolan on irc.videolan.org (Freenode) .

Sorry Antonie perhaps I have created confusion.
I have istalled vlc but I faced up to many problem to attain my target.
But now vlc works even if It don't stream file between computers in different vlan and don't stream using command line.
Is it clear the problem?

There's another problem.
Below you can find what appear in the linux shell when the streming is running between host in the same vlan even if all seems ok in the vlc window:

root@multi1:~# vlc
VLC media player 0.8.1 Janus
