It's useless. You can sort the playlist columns manually already.

hey! tmpdx
sorry that i tamper to this debate. have you fixed it in the meantime ? i have done this random play reverse. under preferences i put a checkmark on "playlist" --> "files every play in random mode" that vlc should play in random mode. Delete this checkmark on that , settings save, restart , and additional look after restarted vlc at the control element in the left side below stairs, there are all buttons you can click , beginning from left to right (play, return, stop,....and so on) look to the last button the ultimate right in this area, if there is pushed. This is the "random play" button too on the control element. click again, put them "off" (button looks like coming out) and restart vlc. pls tell me , if it fixed.

bye

I had exactly the same problem with VLC Version 2.0.3.
I want to thank Mistertool for pointing out the simple solution and to confirm that this is the right solution.
It is not a Windows or any other OS problem - it happens with 3 different ones I tried.

What causes the confusion is that if the Random Play Button is pressed in then changing the Random Play tick box in the preferences has no effect.

Thanks again Mistertool

Its now fixed - at least on 2.2.1 (windows version) - just check "display playlist tree" in playlist settings and it will do the trick !
Edit: The English option name is not really clear, strange thing is that in french its more logical !
Edit2: It only work when you add a directory, not a file selection :-/

If you manually add a folder instead of the multiple files selected together, it will work!!!!
