cannot open audio device

Postby OneSeventeen » 28 Jul 2005 18:09

I recently switched to ubuntu linux from windows, and aside from DVD video being very staggered, I cannot hear any sounds.

When I view messages it just says that it cannot open audio device.

go to the preferences and in audio/audio output choose another module.
Save and restart vlc.

For vlc i think you should first try esd

What's strange is if I browse the /dev folder with vlc, then I don't see any of the items I see when I browse with nautalis.

I have even chmodded a few files with 777 and vlc's browser still doesn't see them.

If I manually type them in, it never finds them. (i have tried snd, audio, and dsp, none of which work.)

I wish there was a way to find out what other programs are using, such as CD player, system sounds, etc.

Oddly, snd is a folder, but everything else is a single file.

oops, forgot to login first.

I also wanted to mention that it won't play audio CDs either, it just sees the data from the CD, not the audio tracks.

okay, after following my distro's guide on getting sound to work here I can now hear it, although the video is crazy choppy, until I play the same scene the 2nd time around, then it is crazy fast, but that's another thread.

Consider this solved.
