Installing VLC without root access in Fedora 11

Hi gurus

We have Fedora 11 in our college PCs and we don't have root access. I want to install VLC on the PC.

I know that the root password can be reset using a live CD, but assuming one doesn't want to go that far...

I read about the compiling it yourselves method, but the PCs don't have the RPM Dev Tools installed either.

So can I install VLC without root access? I'm a Linux noob as of now (hopefully not for long )

You need the SDK to bootstrap. Without SDK, you're obviously screwed.

you might be able to use vlc portable + wine.

Or to use a virtual machine within which you run VLC, or compile it to for the native machine.

Downloading VLC Portable right now.

And I had thought about a Virtual Machine too, but the PCs here are ancient - 512MB RAM, ancient dual-core processors.
