[Kubuntu] Sound problems with VLC and flv files

Postby lordsloth » 20 Apr 2010 21:57

I am using Kubuntu (specifically 8.04.4). I have been using VLC to play flv files successfully for many months.
Today however, I suddenly find that I no longer get sound when playing flv files. Othe filetypes seem to still be working properly.

The only thing I can think of that has changed since I last played a file successfully is installing a few updates with the auto updater as well as installing a debian package (specifically Gens_2.16.7_i386.deb).

Does anybody have any idea what could be causing my problem? I have tried un- and reinstalling vlc but as expected with little result.

Same issue here, Kubuntu 8.0.4. Running from console says

Code: Select all

"[00000497] avcodec decoder error: cannot open codec (MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3) [00000497] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `mp3 '. VLC probably does not support this sound or video format."
I have installed today last version of ffmpeg with the tutorial on http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= ... stcount=36 but I don't know if it's related.
Other MP3 files (and videos with mp3 format which are not in flv container) work fine.

You've installed an incompatible version of FFmpeg.

Another same issue, but on Ubuntu 8.04 und using VLC to play not only flv format.
Using it succefully until the last Ubuntu official security updates dated Tue Apr 20 that cames out with:

Code: Select all

Commit Log for Tue Apr 20 17:01:36 2010 Updated following packets: ffmpeg (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.3) to 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.4 libavcodec1d (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.3) to 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.4 libavformat1d (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.3) to 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.4 libpostproc1d (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.3) to 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.4 libswscale1d (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.3) to 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.4 libavutil1d (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.3) to 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.4
After that, there are no more audio playing on FLVs.
Running VLC from shell, output is:

Code: Select all

$ vlc VLC media player 0.8.6e Janus [00000382] ffmpeg decoder error: cannot open codec (MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3) [00000382] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `mp3 '. VLC probably does not support this sound or video format. [00000284] main playlist: stopping playback
Important to comment that in this same period I updated adobe Flash player from version 9.x to the last 10.0.45.2
I don't be shure if there is some connection or interaction between them.
Any way, MP3 audio files and FLVs with codec MPEG-4 AAC audio are still playables.

Thanks for your advice.

There has been some poor behavior reported since those updates were applied, a bug report I noticed for karmic, likely hardy is also affected. (and more than wma decoding is broken
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/567913
I have installed today last version of ffmpeg with the tutorial..
If you followed that guide exactly then your ffmpeg build would have no effect on your repo or ppa vlc.

If you added --enabled-shared to the configure then it's likely you would have issues. (there's very little to be gained by building a current ffmpeg as shared, even less so on 8.04

For the moment, in waiting for the official Ubuntu's bug fix for the ffmpeg last updates troubles, that "should" appear today,
the "self made solution" that I applied with succes is forcing downgrade the updated package relative to the libavcodec1d
from libavcodec1d (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.4) to 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7

Now, VLC audio it is ok playing FLVs and other standard formats.

This drastic downgrading, from v. 7.4 to v. 7 version, is done because is the only alternative offered by the Ubuntu package manager Synaptic, (obviously, it implies security risks: libavcodec1d v. 7 is dated much more before march 2009), but it works.

For the newbies colleges, the procedure to downgrade packages is opening the package manager, Synaptic, graphically:
System > Package Manager > search package > select package > force version > select previous version > accept > apply .

Thanks to mc2man for the upper link and advice.

Good notices for the FFmpeg team, Ubuntu (and maybe Kubuntu) users:
Just today I have received the Ubuntu official update patch for the FFmpeg and relative libs:

Code: Select all

Actualized the following packages : ffmpeg (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.4) to 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.5 libavcodec1d (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7) to 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.5 libavformat1d (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.4) to 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.5 libavutil1d (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.4) to 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.5 libpostproc1d (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.4) to 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.5 libswscale1d (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.4) to 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7.5
Actually, VLC plays normally the audio and video standard formats as ever.
For the moment, troubles seems to be solved.

Greettings and thanks to the developer and team for give us this magnificent, "simple", all in one VLC player.

Good work and fortune.
