No video output window with VLC 1.0.5 on debian ppc linux

Hello,

I'm having an issue with VLC 1.0.5 - I get no video output window. The GUI comes up fine. I've tried to play multiple video formats with the same result. I'm running on a PowerPC with Debian Linux.

Using the debian package installer is not an option because the vast number of VLC dependencies will impact other users on this machine so I've built VLC 1.0.5 from scratch.

I forgot to mention something important: I am exporting my VLC display to another Linux machine. The VLC GUI exports fine and I've also tested it with simple apps like xclock.

I know I'm just talking to myself here but I've made some progress:

By using command line option -V X11 I think I'm correctly telling VLC to use X11 as the video output window. As a reminder, I am exporting my display to another Linux machine. Now I get the following error:

I have verified that my /etc/ssh/ssh_config has

set before I ssh into the machine to launch VLC from. I am also using -Y with my ssh.

Hehe, talking to myself some more.

For those interested I've created a working remote VLC with exported X video display by upgrading to 1.0.5 and using the command line options below:

vlc -V x11 --reset-config --reset-plugins-cache

I think I'm almost there! But now I am having an issue with distorted colors on my exported X video display. I play video that is black and white and it has a yellow tint to it. Any ideas anyone?

You're talking to a buggy X11 server that claims to support shared memory but does not. The most well-known case is OpenSSH X11 forwarding.

You can work-around the OpenSSH bug using vlc --no-x11-shm. However, it should be noted that exporting video over SSH is most likely to fail miserably anyway due to insufficient bandwidth.
