Please help, total newbie to linux urgent

Hi all, i purchased a acer aspire one netbook for my daughter, her birthday is on fri and i wanted to set it all up ready for her. I am having trouble playing movies which are on a memory stick, it plays the sound but does not show the picture, it did this with the m player which came with it too, so i managed after some time to download vlc player from acer website, and still the same no picture, please help as i am soooooooooo used to window and easily installing things this has baffled me.

Taking a wild guess this is Ubuntu, since it's an Aspire (?) but you didn't even say.

If so however, Ubuntu has excellent forums.
