Gunk when playing DVD under Ubuntu

Postby Aaron44126 » 14 Jul 2009 03:37

Anyone know how to fix this?

Image

This happens when trying to play a DVD in VLC 1.0 on Ubuntu. Unencrypted DVDs work fine, so I suspect it is something to do with the encryption on retail DVDs. I have libdvdcss2 installed, and I can see that it is being invoked by watching vlc output in the terminal. The only errors in the terminal output have to do with the MPEG encoder finding bad frames (which seems reasonable, given the output). I don't think it's a VLC problem since I have similar problems playing DVDs in other programs, like mplayer. But I'm hoping that someone here with Linux/Ubuntu experience can point me in the right direction.

Works fine in VLC under Windows.

you could open vlc with vlc -vvv and ck. output.

Better to try this first.

With the dvd already in the drive go into your home folder and delete the .dvdcss folder.
Then run this from terminal, in vlc go media -> open disc, let vlc run for a moment .and then look for vlc_output.log in home folder. Will show what libdvdcss2 did. (make sure the .dvdcss folder is deleted before running command

Code: Select all

export DVDCSS_VERBOSE=2 && vlc >vlc_output.log 2>&1

I deleted the .dvdcss folder and ran VLC with the intent to capture the log output and post it here...
But the DVD played fine! I am guessing that deleting the .dvdcss folder fixed it? Maybe some junk got "lodged" in there.

Anyways, thanks a lot!
