VLC and Ubuntu 8.10

Playback quality from commercial DVDs with VLC and Ubuntu 8.10 is disappointing. The video is jerky and the sound as bad. The DVDs play OK on my desktop with Windows and VLC. I dont actually think this is a VLC issue because the same effects are seen with the Ubuntu built in video player. Any help to resolve this issue would be very much appreciated.

Vlc doesn't play Youtube videos AT ALL on my system (ubuntu 8.10) Although it does play avi.

I don't want have to go and convert every youtube video I download
