Libraries needed to transcode to H.264 and MPEG-4 audio

Hi,

I'm trying to trasconde MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 videos into H.264/MPEG-4 audio but I get error messages regarding lack of codecs. I would like to know what should I do (what libraries should I install) in order to transcode properly.
