Problems installing 0.9.0 on gutsy in VMware

Hello,
i was using vlc 0.8.6c but now i need to install version 0.9.0 because of a codec i need. I downloaded the vlc_0.9.0-svn20080314-0-0.tar.gz package and extracted it. But now i don't know further. Can anyone explain me in step by step on how to install that program. thanks and sorry if thats a studid question.
