using vlc to capture video

Hi there,

I want to record video onto my harddrive using my tv tuner card and vlc. Is it possible? If so what are the steps?

yes, it's possible if your tuner card supports v4l (video4linux).

just try using File -> Open Capture Device in wxwidgets interface. You could get device names from dmesg output.

Hi Thresh,

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what the wxwigets interface is. I can open the open capture device under file on the vlc media player.; I do that and open the video 4 linux tab: video device name is /dev/video and audio device is dev/dsp. Norm is automatic and frequency is -1. These settings appear in the customoize bar below. I press ok and an error window shows saying "Unabble to open 'v4l://'

Hi there,

Sorry for the lack of info.

My video card is Videomate TV PCI Tuner card and I see it is listed as functional with video4linux. What name do I put in for video device name and audio device name?
