Choppy and staggering playback on openSUSE 10.2

Postby superphysics » 25 Nov 2007 18:19

I just installed a fresh copy of openSUSE 10.2, all graphics drivers on my 2 GHz Dual core, 2 GB RAM machine. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600I'm a fresh user of Linux.

I installed VLC player as specified in the instructions on the download page. The problem is that most video formats are playing very badly - chopping and staggering - while the audio is prefectly OK. I say 'most' formats because there is at least one format (*.asf) that is playing OK. I haven't been able to ascertain if there are other such formats.

I have been through the official and unofficial wikis. Nothing helps.

What is the problem? Can someone help?

Do you have by any chances Compiz running on your system?

I've seen several issues with compiz and video playback, from blurry images up to not recognizable.

No. Compiz is not installed on my system. It is a fresh copy of openSUSE and the only thing I installed before the vlc player was my video card driver.
