Suse 10.2 vlc dependencies

Postby yedidyah » 06 Jul 2007 21:24

I have the videolan respository set up also packman and guru. VLC won't set up because of this dependency issue. Is there some package(s) from some repository that needs to be installed?

Okay now I am opening a new can of worms as I tried to download and install libmatroska.so.0 rpm I get the following dependency error:

#### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2007-07-06 13:31:11 ####

libmatroska-0.8.0-30.i586[_krpmview_temporary] cannot be installed due to missing dependencies

Conflict Resolution:

( ) Ignore this requirement just here

#### YaST2 conflicts list END ###

I fear I am chasing stuff that can be installed in a single package what am I missing?

Okay the only way I got VLC running in 10.2 is this:

FRESH Install of Suse 10.0 (I bought it from Novell when it first came out)

(I used the ext3 format instead of reiserfs I think developers are trying to get away from reiserfs and I did the partitions the way suse 10,2 wanted to but I don't know if this part of this step is really necessary).

Install vlc under suse 10.0

UPGRADE to Suse 10.2

I spent days trying to follow everyone else's: install this that and the other thing directions and nothing worked. This is the only thing I found to work.

I have to admit it seems the last fully functional Suse that is worth anything is Suse 10.0. I hated 10.1 and wont even touch it. Suse 10.2 only works FOR ME as an upgrade not as a sole install.

And as far as ZENworks well it doesn't. Zen doesn't work in the real world and it doesn't work in cyberspace.I won't install it because it messes my computer up.

By the way the new age terminology turns people off it makes me wonder if the developers have their heads in the clouds instead of in computers.

I think Suse needs to go back to 10.0 and figure out where they went wrong. I am a Suse user I think it is the best linux available but if they want to continue pressuring Microsoft they had better get this stuff worked out.

Sorry for the late reply.

Be guaranteed that the complicated installation using the 10.0 and the upgrade path to 10.2 is not needed at all.

From your logs I could see that you tried to install the VLC package from the PackMan repository. Even though it is a very known and wide spread repository, we can not offer support for those packages.

On the other hand, the VLC Project offers an own VLC Repository that you can / should add to your openSUSE 10.2 installation if you want to have VLC running. Please have a look at the our instructions at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-suse.html

Should there still be issues, don't hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your reply,

It is important to note with these issues that yes I did use packman but the videolan repository failed also as I used it first.

I have posted these issues on other linux forums and the response is the same that there is a problem with suse 10.2 and vlc. Perhaps not everyone has these issues but I wonder how many got so irritated they just didn't say anything and went back to windows or other linux versions.

It seems to me that ALL of vlc does not install from either packman or videolan repository but does with suse 10.0. Issues of libmatroska and other dependency issues make it a VERY painful experience trying to install vlc on 10.2.

I also do not seem to be able to install in OpenSuse 10.2
I cannot even create the repository : error message : "error occured while creating the catalog" / " http://download.videolan.org//pub/video ... SuSE/10.2/
Unknown Error: Downloading metadata failed (is YUM source?) or user did not accept remote source. Aborting refresh."
That's it....

I have tried to set up the repository and get the following error:-

http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/SuSE/10.2
Unknown Error: Downloading metadata failed (is YUM source?) or user did not accept remote source. Aborting refresh.

Any ideas??

OK, Here is a work around for those installing on SUSE 10.2.
Set up the repository for 10.1> Try to install with software management until you get the "nothing to install err" and back out. > Now edit the installation source from 10.1 to 10.2. This should go OK. Now try installing again and hey presto!!

It worked fine for me, I hope is does for you..

well, well, thanks again for the report.

IT seems one of the last updates of the repos mixed up a few things: the gpg key that signed the repo was not available in the repodata directory anymore.

Thus: the ones that had it already added did not have a problem (they had the key from an earlier session, like me), and new ones got that weird error message (well: it would not hurt to have a message that says what the problem was).
(btw: that's why this workaround mentioned above worked; the 10.1 repo still had the key.. so after adding the 10.1, the 10.2 knew about the key)

Anyhow: I just have a sync running and you can expect an updated repo in a few minutes to be completely available (in fact, 10.2/i586 is complete, x86_64 is just loading).

I hope this solves your problem; in any case, please drop a message about yes or no (so we know about the status.

Best regards, and sorry for the trouble!

I disabled the packman installation source and was able to install VLC in SUSE 10.2 with no dependency problems.

I'm not sure what was with the packman source, but it was coming up with about 15 different dependency problems on my nice, fresh install of 10.2.

"aarond12"'s suggestion works amazingly.

Turn off all other installation sources (packman is enough, if it does not work and if you have added mirrors, turn off them) and then try to install VLC. It works.

Have wonderful time.

Adios.
