OpenSuse 10.2: "Unknown Error: Downloading metadata failed"

Postby zugvogel » 14 Jul 2007 05:44

I have been trying to install VLC on a fresh OpenSuse 10.2 installation by adding http://download.videolan.org//pub/video ... /SuSE/10.2 as an installation source. I am getting nowhere due to the dreaded "Unknown Error: Downloading metadata failed ...". Rebooting did not help, neither did it start working after multiple retries (to cover the bases laid out by earlier documented problems with similar symptoms).

Interestingly, the same procedure worked with a similar fresh installation in early July. Interestingly also that I *can* add the corresponding 10.1 source without any complaints (of course, I still cannot install due to dependency problems). Last not least, I noticed there has been a massive file rollover (on the 10.2 source) between my first and my second install.

Could anyone give me a hint on how I would make use of the modified 10.2 installation source?

Thanks in advance,

Zugvogel

Zugvogel,

thank you for your report. I, as the maintainer of that repo, am just trying to reproduce this behavior on my 10.2 box.
It will probably take a while.. but I'll give more feedback later this evening... Stay tuned.

weird:

I just removed all my repos and readded the vlc repo. No problem detected.

I added it the following way:
Yast2 -> Installation Source
Add, specify URL
URL: http://download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/SuSE/10.2
it downloaded the meta data and it worked.

Do you still have zen installed on your 10.2 box?

For anycase, you can try to PM (or catch me on the irc channel); I might be interested in some logfiles of yours.

Greetings!

well, well, thanks again for the report.

IT seems one of the last updates of the repos mixed up a few things: the gpg key that signed the repo was not available in the repodata directory anymore.

Thus: the ones that had it already added did not have a problem (they had the key from an earlier session, like me), and new ones got that weird error message (well: it would not hurt to have a message that says what the problem was).

Anyhow: I just have a sync running and you can expect an updated repo in a few minutes to be completely available (in fact, 10.2/i586 is complete, x86_64 is just loading).

I hope this solves your problem; in any case, please drop a message about yes or no (so we know about the status.

Best regards, and sorry for the trouble!

DimStar,

I just gave it a try. The rebuilt directory installs as a source without complaint, and vlc installed from it without a hitch.

Thanks very much for your work!

Hi, i have just got a very similar problem when trying to create a new installation source.

I am running SLES10 64 and have already successfully set one installation for the SLES software to be installed from our network.

I have tried the following:

download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/SuSE/10.1
download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/SuSE/10.1

Each time i get: "Unable to create installation sourcefrom URL 'http://download.videolan.org/....." Details: cannot create the installation source.

Also i have tried from a terminal session:
sudo rug sa -t zypp http://download.videolan.org/pub/ ..... VLC

And this gives: "ERROR: Could not add http://download.videolan.org/pub/...... : Failed to parse XML metadata: Can't ad repository at http://download.videolan.org/pub ...: Cannot create the installation source.

Many thanks
