Debian apt-get fails

Following the instructions on http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-debian.html, I tried to get VLC:

1. I added these lines to /etc/apt/sources:
deb http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian sarge main
deb-src http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian sarge main

2. I ran "apt-get update"

3. I ran "apt-get install vlc libdvdcss2" which yielded this:
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
libdvdcss2 is already the newest version.
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

try commenting out those videolan repositories unless you want dvd decryption.

A "locate vlc" on my system returned nothing.

The instructions on http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-debian.html mention that I should be able to install vlc on sarge with these commands:

# apt-get update
# apt-get install vlc libdvdcss2

Those commands generate this output:

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against

Is the package faulty or is there something else going on?

When I said vlc was in sarge, I meant that it was in the sarge repositories. Comment out the Videolan repositories, do an "apt-get update", then "apt-get install vlc". And honestly, you should be upgrading to debian etch.

I did exactly what you said and still got this:

That makes me wonder if other sources in my list have the same vlc package as videolan.

Just curious, why do you feel so strongly that I should upgrade my OS? Besides vlc, everything works great and I am productive. To upgrade means a significant investment in time and energy and the risk that some applications I use won't work. I do upgrade every few years when it hits a critical mass, but I'm nowhere near that yet. But maybe you know of another reason that I'm not aware of, so I'm asking.

Well, it is just that sarge is the old stable now and etch is the new stable. so, expect to receive less or no updates for sarge in the future, that's why. of course if that's a mission critical machine and dont want to risk, that's ok.

Though be aware that it might not be a simple apt-get dist-upgrade. check http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/r ... en-gb.html

So I seem to have some apt sources that have a broken vlc package as far as Debian Sarge is concerned. I'm wondering where I could find an older source that would have a version of vlc that worked on Sarge.

It would seem to be the case that the VLC download page for Debian needs to be corrected, since the instructions for Sarge appear to be obsolete/incorrect.
