VLC not starting in OpenSUSE 10.2

Postby arunmib » 14 Apr 2007 18:16

Hi,
I have been using VLC in windows and Suse it was flawless and was a wonderful product. Both are 32-bit versions.
My laptop is a 64-bit machine so I decided to upgrade my OS to 64 bit. I did it only for linux and now it's running on Open Suse 10.2 - 64 bit version. I downloaded and successfully installed VLC. But whenever I try to open VLC it never loads. I am facing this problem only after upgrading my OS to 64 bit . I downloaded the 64bit version of vlc only.

In short VLC has never even started in my machine.....

Some help please......

arnumib,

That is a quiet strange behaviour of your box, but I'm sure we can solve it (somehow).

First, can you give us some output of your machine?
Open a terminal and try to start vlc from there

just type

Code: Select all

vlc -v
in the terminal window
and copy the output here. This might give us some clues.

Did you let the package manager (yast) handle the installation?

Becuase it looks like your installation was forced over the dependency check of rpm.

Try installing libdc1394 in plus to your installation and this error should be gone. Should there be others, please again report the error here.

Hi,
I used YAST only for installation. I added a new installation source repository by adding the URL provided in you website. Then used YAST for installation.

I didn't download anything separately and used that for installation.

Ok You have mentioned about installing libdc1394 separately. Well exactly how to do it or where to find for this file ?
Anyways I will try to google about the installation procedure for the file. In the mean time, if you know the procedure, please let me know....

you should be able to search for libdc1384 in yast too and install it exactly like you installed vlc.

It is either on the CDs / DVD (I think it really is) or you find it in the online repository of openSUSE 10.2 (which you could have activated during the setup).

Hey really thanks man.... I installed the library file and it worked.... :D

Now I have a different problem, probably a milder one.. It's with the user interface....

Whenever I try to "open a file" or click "Edit preferences" etc... (mean to say any button) I get error messages....I've copied and pasted the error right from the stage I loaded it from console...

Hi,

it seems your installation is in a very broken state.
Can you please issue, as root on a terminal, the command

Code: Select all

rpm -V vlc
then please paste me the whole output here.
