[HTPC] is vlc suited for this ?

Postby TTK » 13 Mar 2007 10:32

Hi

I'm trying to build a HTPC, based on a linux box. The linux operated PC will be connected to the TV, without any keyboard or mouse. I wish to access the files through a WiFi PDA. The PDA will run some kind of remote controller for the VLC server hosted on the linux box.

Am I clear enough ?

My point is to avoid using (and configuring) a remote (no luck with lirc config up to now). Plus the WiFi PDA will make it possible to interact with the HTPC from another room ! And also the file browser will let me do simple file manipulations on the server easily.

From what I understand, you can use VLC to send video over the net. My point here is to control VLC over the net, but display the video stream on the "local" box.

Thanks for your inputs.

It is unclear to me what a HTPC is, but accessing VLC through rc or http interface from another comp/PDA is possible.

Hi

HTPC stands for Home Theater PC.

My question was: is it possible to control VLC through http from my PDA and make it display the video on the PC video card, i.e. not on my PDA ...

Mayby not the answer you're waiting for, but a shot in an other direction. Is it possible to use your PDA as a second display for your system? (As in, the second monitor is your PDA)
If so, you could have the controls of VLC in this screen and watch your HTPC entertainment on your TV.

I thought of this solution, but I'd like to buy a really cheap PDA. I guess it would need a bigger proc to be running some kind of xorg server (or cygwin ...). Of course a linux capable PDA would be my choice of heart ...

Thx
