VLC no 5.1 sound with pulse audio

Postby whitethorn » 04 Sep 2008 14:44

Hi,

I have VLC version 0.8.6e Janus installed. When I use pulse as my Audio ouput module I don't get the option under Audio -> Channels -> 5.1 .

When I use ALSA as my output module, then the option is there. Is there some way of getting this to work?

Hi there,
exactly the same problem occurs for me. I cannot choose the 5.1 Device when using PulseAudio (no matter if another application is using sound or not). With ALSA as the output module it will run fine. Totem can handle 5.1 Output and PulseAudio. Is this a pulseaudio problem or a vlc problem?

Same here.. Since the VLC became with the 0.9.x version to the best player EVER, it would be reeeeeeeeealy awesome if it's pulse plugin would support 6 channels. PLEAAAAAAAAAASE!! :)

maybe it's not VLC's fault. It might be the pulse-alsa plugin that its configured with only 2 channels. I'll try playing with it.

Well, I think most devs don't have 6 channels... this is why.

AFAIK, VLC PulseAudio plugin was contributed by Ubuntu developpers, and is not maintained directly.

The problem seems to be fixed in Ubuntu 8.10.
Can somebody confirm it?

Hi,
vlc pulseaudio plugin now supports only stereo output. Support for more channels needs to be done.

Hi,
Just as an update to this I wrote a patch that has been added to the git tree that supports surround sound (7.1,5.1,4.0, etc) pulseaudio output.
It should be in 0.9.6 or is available from git source.

kind regards,
Danny

So, does this mean you have to build vlc yourself to get surround sound with pulseaudio?

You need to use VLC 0.9.6 or later. You should already be using VLC 1.0.6 anyway (since earlier versions are insecure), so I fail to see a problem.

I fail to see the relationship with the earlier problems.

I would be very surprised if PulseAudio could mix multiple SPDIF signals. It should be no wonder that you can only have one application using the output at a time. That's really a design limitation of SPDIF.

when pulseaudio is selected as the default device, i can't select 'audio device>5.1'
