Problem with 5.1 sound in Ubuntu

Whenever I try to play a movie with 5.1 sound, the sound output is garbled. If I chose the audio device as stereo, it works fine. The same movie plays fine in Totem with 5.1 output. My VLC version is 0.8.5.

I downloaded the source files and compiled 0.8.6 version in Ubuntu Dapper. The problem still exists. These are the options with which I compiled:

Code: Select all

./configure --prefix=/usr/local --enable-x11 --enable-xvideo --disable-gtk --enable-sdl --enable-ffmpeg --enable-mad --enable-libdvbpsi --enable-a52 --enable-dts --enable-libmpeg2 --enable-dvdnav --enable-faad --enable-vorbis --enable-ogg --enable-theora --enable-faac --enable-mkv --enable-freetype --enable-fribidi --enable-speex --enable-flac --enable-caca --enable-skins --enable-skins2 --enable-alsa --disable-kde --disable-qt --enable-wxwindows --enable-ncurses --enable-release

The last build that this worked correctly was 0.8.4a. See my post in viewtopic.php?p=95993#95993
for more information about the problem.

I compiled the 0.8.4a version. With this also the sound is garbled. This is what I get in the console if I play an ac3 encoded file:

Code: Select all

Well i've used several DVDs with this so far with SPDIF. Are you using 5.1 analog or SPDIF?

I'm using it over analog.
