S/PDIF A/52 stopped working after upgrade to 0.8.4

I've just upgraded to 0.8.4 from 0.8.2 and I've found that A52 via S/PDIF has stopped working. When I say stopped working, I get no sound and my amp doesn't say "Dolby Digital" so I guess there's no signal over S/PDIF. On the command line, I get the following messages:

[00000318] a52 decoder: A/52 channels:6 samplerate:48000 bitrate:448000
[00000326] alsa audio output error: internal: can't find audio-device (10)
[00000326] oss audio output error: cannot reset OSS audio device
[00000259] main playlist: stopping playback

I'm sure S/PDIF is working because I have MythMusic working fine. Also, while the video is playing, if I change the Audio Device from A52 to Stereo, the stereo signal is sent over S/PDIF and plays back perfectly.

Has anybody else seen this problem? I noticed in the changelist that multi-channel audio over S/PDIF had been "fixed". Could this be related?

I'm running Debian unstable, Xorg, ALSA, VIA EPIA M1000.

Chris.

Hello,

We probably have fixed the problem in a SVN branch at svn://svn.videolan.org/vlc/branches/0.8.4a

If you can, could you please try to build and test this ?

We will probably be releaseing this bugfix version in a few days and it should be in unstable very soon after

Thanks for the reply.

I use the released packages and haven't gone down the route of building it myself, so it's probably easiest if I just wait for 0.8.4a. I'll let you know if it fixes the problem.

You can also try a package from http://nightlies.videolan.org if you're running i386 or amd 64. ( Well once we fixed the build)

I've tried the nightly build labelled the 30th and it's still broken. Not sure how I tell if it's got the fix in or not?!

EDIT: This is wrong - please ignore! I actually downloaded the Debian nightly which hasn't been rebuilt since the 27th.

test 0.8.4a branch

I bumped into the same problem (SPDIF doesn't work anymore)
0.8.4 didn't work
0.8.4a does work again.
setup: debian/unstable ice1724 (Terratec Aureon 7.1-Space)

I got the same problem.

I have a DFI Lanparty nForce4 SLI motherboard. Running VLC in Windows.

SPDIF is not working in 0.8.4. Nor is it working in the 0.8.5-svn-20051207 nightly build.

I just reverted to VLC 0.8.2, where SPDIF accually works flawlessly.

just a comment to my previous post

This bug appears alot like the way really old versions of AC3Filter used to work. Choppy (and maybe really slow) playback.

I noticed this bug yesterday too. I'm using a Terratec DMX 1024 and it's SPDIF. My receiver informs me that the there is a AC3 stream entering, but I can not hear any sound. Zoomplayer & AC3filter works flawlessly.

I need to try the 0.8.2 to see if it helps.

Tested with 0.8.2 (win) and spdif out works with it. 0.8.4 seems to be broken on ac3 output.

My original problem is now fixed with 0.8.4a.

Thank you.

My original problem is now fixed with 0.8.4a.
The new a-version (windows) did not solve my case of silent AC3 stream over S/PDIF. 0.8.2 works well as I stated earlier. In my case my receiver informs that a 5.1 stream is coming in and I hear the correct relay snap on inside it. For some reason there is only silence...

Stereo sound over S/PDIF works...

Hmm... I probably should go to the windows side with a new thread.
