VLC 1.2/1.3 sound problems with SPDIF on Ubuntu.

Postby hobbes_ba » 31 Dec 2011 14:53

Hi, this is my first post.

Looking for better performance on HD content I''ve installed 1.2 and 1.3 builds of VLC from the master-daily vlc PPA on ubuntu https://launchpad.net/~videolan/+archive/master-daily

I always used vlc 1.1 to watch movies with SPDIF support enabled (via alsa) with no problems.

This issue is present with 1.2 and 1.3 builds of VLC.

I've lost sound (strangely except for AC3 2.O) over spdif. Even Stereo audio e.g. mp3 stop working. Nothing really happens on my receiver (Logitech Z-5550)

Here is the output from command line from a VLC 1.3 Build (just remembering it was the same thing on 1.2):

VLC media player 1.3.0-git Rincewind (revision 1.3.0~~git20111230+r1090)
[0x19661d8] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.

[0x7feec804b748] dts decoder: DTS channels:6 samplerate:48000 bitrate:1536000
[0x1e5a3b8] main audio output error: conversion pipeline failed: dts -> dts
[0x1e5a3b8] main audio output error: cannot setup filtering pipeline
[0x7feec804b748] main decoder error: failed to create audio output

is there anybody else having this issue?

Any tips?

Thanks

Hi,

The solution I had with the 1.1.9 on Ubuntu was just to select alsa on audio/preferences, check in the Use S/PDIF when avalaible and
choose the Digital output on my audio card.

After that, when the movie is started, just choose Audio Device A/52 over SPDIF.

I you don't have thoses menus available, just purge and reinstall vlc.

For my uses, with coaxial RCA Digital or optical, it's ok.
Hope it will be ok for you

Thanks for answering Krisofe.

I've find the solution for this issue. It was only a matter of configuration.

I was unaware that PulseAudio + Gstreamer can now delivery DD/DTS passthrough. (and so VLC)

So I had to install pavucontrol and correctly setup my soundcard output.

Problem solved.
